Beowulf is an epic poem from Anglo Saxon time, which explains the customs and values of Anglo Saxon. Anglo Saxon had a very simple life style. All they do was look for food every day and fight for their lives. They did not have TV, radio or theater. Therefore, telling the stories was one of their ways they received their entertainment. Beowulf is the one of the story people told in Anglo Saxton time as form of entertainment. In the story anonymous author uses light and dark imgary to show evil and god. Imaginary has always been used to show the differences between good and evil. The universal meaning of light is something being good or a hero, and dark is something being bad or evil. In the poem, light and dark are used to describe the differences between Beowulf and Grendel.
Anonymous author use light imaginary to describe Beowulf in line 150. "Gleaming armor and battle-gear [...] (150), in this line author is telling what they are wearing and describing their characteristic at same time. Author is trying to tell reader that they are going for battle, by using the word battle-gear. We can tell battle is against evil because battle-gear is gleaming and gleaming is a light imaginary. In the next few lines it goes on to say how the armor was "shinning" and "gleaming" again, making the image stronger. Then in line 420-40 author is describes how brave Beowulf was in previous battle when he was young. When Beowulf and his friend were swimming in the ocean and it was dark and sea monster drag Beowulf down. Dark imaginary describes evil. Then sun rose and every thing were calm. The sun describes light imaginary which describe good and Beowulf got saved from monster.
