Ralph Nader: Consumer Advocate

             Consumer advocacy is an important, yet an underestimated part of the American way of life. Investigating items for consumption and making sure they are fit for public utilization is an overwhelming task that takes diligent work and strenuous efforts. The consumer advocate movements can usually be solidified behind one name, for example the expose on the meat packing industry by Upton Sinclair, and the works of John Stossel who uses the medium of television and takes a hardnosed line against the government for consumer protection. Many modern movements can be described as groups working together including civil rights movements and various others, however with consumer advocacy there is usually one person in the limelight. One of the most important consumer advocates of our time is Ralph Nader. While Nader is one of the most notable names in recent consumer advocacy he has many groups that he has organized to forward his goals of a safer consumer market.
             Ralph Nader was placed in the public spotlight through the publication of Unsafe At Any Speed. It detailed General Motors' new car 'The Corvair', a car that was revealed to be unsafe but very lucrative for the company. Unsafe At Any Speed, published in 1965 all accomplished him footing in politics and how they impact safety regulations, coining the phrase "The only honest man in Washington". Nader has applied the medium of literature to his benefit by writing several books that give in-depth looks at consumer products and businesses. The Closed Enterprise System a book that detailed: the top 200 corporations in America controlling over two-thirds of all manufacturing assets, how the few heavyweight corporations cost the United States of America 60 billion dollars in gross domestic product, how if the monopolies were busted that competition would drop the prices of goods down by 25% (from the current price in 1970), and how only three business executives hav...
