There were many events, both large and small, that led to the metamorphosis of Dunny. Some of these events may seem insignificant to us but had an extremely large impact on Dunny. One of the first major events in Dunnys life was at the impromptu show being put on for the soldiers. He told dirty jokes in a Charlie Chaplain costume and was an immediate hit. Due to his acceptance by his peers and his cool head, he was promoted to captain, but to Dunny the greatest feeling was being accepted by his peers, "But I think my most surprising achievement was becoming Charlie" (72). He did not care about rank or the number of stars on his chest, he cared about friendship, and his nickname showed it. In a world where everything was routine; the same slop, the same faces, he stood out from the crowd. Another key event in Dunnys life was when he took out an entire German machine gun nest. He was awarded for his bravery and his courage, but he knew he did not deserve the medal. Someone who killed three human beings, to Dunny, did not deserve a medal. "I am not proud of it now and I did not glory in it then War puts men in situations where these things happen" (75) Doing this, taught Dunny that he was not invincible, he was but a mere mortal in a world where death takes place constantly. Having a near death experience and being bought back to life by a loving and caring Diana taught him that he must cherish and love those who love him. However to Dunny, Diana was to be loved in an obligatory sense. He felt he had to care for her, because she cared and nursed him. He again was thrust into the position of being weak and futile. He had not choice, but conceded to Diana's will. "Thus we became lovers in the fullest sense, and for me the experience was an important step towards the completion of manhood..." (85).
