             For a thorough understanding of this book, it is first of all
             necessary to understand just who this book is intended for. Billings
             writes with a particular audience in mind, and it is this audience who
             influences the direction that the book takes. The main audience for this
             book is teachers who teach African-American students, particularly African-
             American female teachers. Billings makes it clear pretty early in the book
             that she regards females as being more nurturing and expressive than males,
             and therefore better candidates to teach the culturally relevant curriculum
             that she envisions. Since the students that the book is trying to help are
             African-American students, Billings also is clear on the fact that she
             believes that African-American teachers are the best teachers for these
