             The Chinese Emigration to Hawaii and the Mainland U.S.
             The Chinese were brought to Hawaii in substantial numbers in
             1852 to harvest sugar cane, and asked to sign a five year contract; and
             many Chinese did not agree to renew their work contract after the five
             years - and why would they, considering how they were treated. The sugar
             plantation supervisors were "abusive" and working conditions "extremely
             unpleasant" (page 27). But when the Chinese who had not signed on for an
             additional five years harvesting sugar, instead settled in Hawaii, there
             were problems resulting from that situation, too. "The Chinese were
             accused of introducingâ€leprosy and smallpox, and immoral habits, such as
