Computers are no longer science fiction rather they are science fact.

Computers permeate every aspect of our lives from applications that tell us

the gender of a child in the womb to pacemakers that keep us alive. They

make our cars run, they cook our food, and they dispense our medication.

Computers enable us to journey into space without leaving the ground.

Technological advances seem a daily event and without them one might

There are advantages and disadvantages to a lifestyle embedded with

computers. Do we really know how living with computers has affected our

ability to survive without them' Do we understand their dangers as well as

The advantages of computers seem obvious. The allow us to do things

faster and better than we could if we did not have them. A very recent

example of this is the human genome project. Scientists could not map

human DNA without the use of computers and computer technology. This

project promises to reveal secrets which may help us prevent disease and

cure genetic problems that plague humankind.

There is, however, a dark side to technology and the spread of

computers into the home. Technology allows us to isolate ourselves from

reality. We learn to "play" at life rather than live it.

While one experiences the nonphysical side of life, on misses out on

the tactile side. Can a computer- generated simulation of a bear ever come

close to the reality of meeting one in the forest' Probably not. The

more one is able to depersonalize others, the easier on can dismiss them -

Sometimes the only things standing between a human being and his

actions are the palpable horror or wonder of the physical sensation those

In conclusion, while technology seems inevitable and impossible to

survive without, one may consider the damage that it can cause. If we lose
