             the rest of the forest continues (ARabbis in the Redwoods@).
             In the 1980s, a small Jewish community moved into Humboldt County, and in
             1996, the three local Jewish leaders appealed to Charles Hurwitz, a well-
             regarded member of his Jewish community in Houston, Texas, to make teshuva
             shelymah (full turning) and after that to dedicate himself to the
             preservation of the ancient forest. This attempt led to their being named
             the "Redwood Rabbis@ (ARabbis in the Redwoods@ 25).
             Earth First! took a different approach in seeking the same sort of
             change and challenged the right of Pacific Lumber to cut down trees in this
             forest. Pacific Lumber is owned by Maxxam Corporation. In 1997, Direct
             Action, a group from Earth First, was picketing and conducting other
             protests at the gates of pacific Lumber. The company brought in the
             authorities and hired many security personnel to break up the protest.
