             citizens the rights and privileges that others enjoy, simply because they
             are poor or unemployed. Bush's "pull yourself up by your bootstraps"
             philosophy might work in some cases, but as a social welfare policy, it
             does nothing to serve the citizens of our great nation. In most cases, the
             only way people can pull themselves up by their bootstraps is with the
             assistance of welfare or other social services.
             So-called "compassionate conservatives" also feel that private
             charities can pick up the slack of the federal government in providing
             welfare services. Conservative politicians would like to offer tax breaks
             for corporate and individual donations to these private organizations.
             Well, my fellow citizens, most of the organizations that President Bush and
             others support are faith-based organizations. That's right" President Bush
             is coming dangerously close to compromising the First Amendment to the
