             nation's history and underpinnings, but these rights can also create some
             perplexing questions when it comes to individuals who have committed
             crimes, and what rights they enjoy weighed against the rights of society,
             and the right of each one of us to live without fear of crime and
             terrorism. Some Supreme Court rulings seem to have challenged the
             individual's rights, and some seem to challenge our basic rights. Two of
             the most powerful and contentious of these decisions were Gideon and
