Catcher in the Rye

             Catcher in the Rye is written by the American writer Jerome David Salinger and was published in 1951. Born on the first of January, 1919 in New York City, J. D. Salinger experienced a rather innocent and safe childhood. In the beginning of his career he wrote short stories for different magazines in New York. The purpose for most of his works from that time was making money, and that is easy to tell considering the literal quality. Although, several novel stood out from the rest, most notably A perfect day for bananafish. Before he had to attend to war, fighting the Germans, he published two episodes from what would become Catcher in the Rye.
             His career is very successful and he is highly respected among people all over the world. His fans have given him ovations time after time for his brilliant authorship. Since he only have published five books, ha can be considered not so productive in his career compared to someone like Stephen King.
             J. D. Salinger has written the novel from the eyes of a young boy, named Holden Caulfield, studying at a luxurious private school in Pennsylvania, USA. The story is told from Holden's perspective and with his own words, reflecting his experiences.
             "If you really want to hear about it, the first thing you'll probably want to know is where I was born, and what my lousy childhood was like . . . and all that David Copperfield kind of crap, but I don't feel like going into it, if you want to know the truth" (p. 1) was the introducing words, spoken by Holden Caulfield sitting in some kind institution, probably a mental hospital, from where he tells about his story. Previous quote is a proof for how the writer lets his main character turn to the reader in a very personal way.
