             Numerous studies have offered recommendations for helping low-income
             and minority women obtain adequate prenatal care and reduce the risk of LBW
             deliveries. Alexander and Korenbrot (1995) suggested "a much broader and
             more unified conception of prenatal care" (p. 1) than currently exists is
             needed in order to help reduce the risk of LBW deliveries, and to increase
             the use rate of more adequate care. To do this, these authors recommended
            
• Promote an integrated approach to prenatal care that enables linkages
             across the diverse the medical community.
            
• Provide population-wide preconception and prenatal education to
             encourage family planning, reproductive health, and health promotion.
            
• Undertake outreach and follow-up initiatives.
