"Causes of the Civil War"

             The Civil War was initiated by many different reasons that made it nearly impossible to avoid it. The John Brown raid made the conflict come further to a head with his violence. Many leaders tried to force their opinion and get what they had wanted. And the North and the South had such extreme differences that it seemed as if no compromise would ever be reached. The Civil War was inevitable because of extremism, failure of leadership, and the differences in the North and the South. They had irreconcilable differences that the only solution seemed to be war.
             Extremism helped to push the views of slavery to the limit. Many of these extreme views were carried out as violent acts and may have even killed people. These people are willing to do anything to get their point across and opinions acknowledged. This type of act led people of the same view well up with support and heightened views. People who were against the view had a growing anger and increased support for their views. The John Brown raid on Harpers Ferry divided the country and made slavery an even larger issue. Acts of extremism led to these heightened feelings that made the war more of a reality.
             The Civil War could not be hindered also because of the failure in leadership. Many representatives in Congress only represented what their state wanted. It was a Northern view or a Southern view. This lead to many heated debates and also threats to secede from the South. There were many botched attempts at trying to appease to both sides, but many of them failed or pushed the war back and postponed it. Many of these actions still left both sides wanting more. Abraham Lincoln recognized these differences in his speech at the Republican state convention. The leaders were unwilling to compromise and this led to many failures in their leadership.
