loneliness

             Loneliness is a prevalent theme in both the novel catcher in the rye and the drama A streetcar named Desire. While both stories are very different and seem like they do not connect in any way, in actuality, they have quite a few joint themes, Loneliness being a very strong one. Holden Caulfield in The Catcher in the Rye, and Blanche Dubois in A streetcar named desire, both suffer from severe loneliness, its almost as if it were a disease. However, these two characters suffer from a different type of loneliness, they kind of loneliness they have doesn't much involve people. They have isolated themselves, not only from people but also from the world as a whole.
             Holden Caulfield in The catcher in the rye is a very lonely person. Even when he was young he was lonely, after his brother dies of course. That is basically when it all started. Ali died and Holden felt guilty, almost as if he should have been the one to die. It wasn't Holden's fault, but in his mind, he repeatedly reminded himself that he was the one not worthy to live in the perfect family. Throughout the story Holden is trying to fill the void of loneliness by doing several things. He attempts to make human contact, not just by talking but also in other ways, but always fails. He had grown so used to being alone that he wasn't able to interact with other people the same way others could.
             Blanche Dubois in A streetcar named desire suffers from the "disease" of loneliness just as much if more the Holden does. Blanches loneliness started when her husband killed himself. As like in Holden's story, Blanche thought it was her fault, and never let that idea go. She would always remember the thing she said to him before he killed himself, but she never realized that he had been depressed for a much longer period of time then just that night.
