             We are living in the midst of a dreaded disease commonly known as AIDS. AIDS is the acronym for Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome. The presence of the disease is found in almost all the countries of the world. It is a viral disease that affects the immune system of human body. The immune system in human body has the natural power to fight out many diseases causing illness to human body. AIDS is caused by a virus called HIV (Human Immune Virus). It is called a dreaded disease because it gradually decreases the functioning of the immune system in the body and hence our body's defenses against infections are weakened. Thereby, our body gets prone even to minor disease. It is a treat to human health. The human body infected with AIDS, after a long suffering, finally meets its death.
             AIDS originated in the African green monkeys of the equator countries. It gradually invaded many more countries of the world. AIDS was first detected in Haiti (USA) in 1981. AIDS is not an epidemic disease but its spreading at an alarming rate. It occurs only when transmitted to human body by way of several modes. The first case of AIDS was found only in homosexual men. Many people began calling the disease the "gay plague ", the "gay cancer", or GRID (short for gay related immunodeficiency disease) and the disease received little attention from the media. There after when an infected homosexual man meets another sexual partner, the disease is transmitted to other body through sexual contact. The other modes of transmission of the disease are by the use of contaminated syringes and needle, by infected blood transfusion, cuts caused by razors already used by an infected person, an infected mother transmitting the disease to the baby in her womb.
             AIDS can be detected by a blood test called "Elisa Test" and "Western Blot Test". These tests give results within 2 to 24 weeks after the HIV infection, as no antibodies are formed during
