             Hemingway's fiction was often autobiographical in nature, or at least semi-autobiographical. For example, in The Sun Also Rises (1926), Hemingway's World War I veteran protagonist Jake Barnes has been wounded in the in the war with shrapnel, as Hemingway himself was while serving as an ambulance driver at the Italian Front (Burgess).
