The main points of the old covenant were inscribed in stone and is described in the Hebrew text as ""the words of the covenant, the ten words" (Exodus 34:28) 1 In terms of the old covenant the Israelites were meant to enter the promised land. However, "They were deceived into rebelling, and even to rejecting the land the Lord was giving to them. Because of that, they had to stay in the wilderness and die there; only their children were allowed to enter the physical Promised Land. (The old and new covenants...)
             The important aspect that is often emphasized about the Mosaic covenant is that it is a covenant that is conditional. In other words it is a covenant between God and humanity which is conditional or dependant on certain aspects and actions. This conditionality can be expressed as follows: "God said do this, obey and he will bless, failure to obey violated his conditions and punishment followed." (THE NEW COVENANT) In other words, this covenant referred to a number of laws that humanity had to follow and which had consequences if they were not adhered to.
             In the Old, God laid down a detailed code of ethical commandments, defining how members of His People are to behave. The principles of all these Laws continue fully in the New Covenant, summarized in two commandments from the Old: "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God...." (Mt. 22:37; Deut. 10:12), and "Thou shalt love thy neighbor..." (Mt. 22:39; Lev. 19:18).
             While the Old Testament Covenant is based on law or rules, the New Testament Covenant is rather based on grace and is unconditional rather then conditional. In the new covenant, "We receive the mercy and blessings of God not because of anything we do but because of what Christ did. As believers in the New Covenant we operate under grace by which good works are a result."
