Cohabitation as an Alternative

The purpose of this study was to examine cohabitation and to find if opinions about cohabitation as an acceptable alternative to marriage varied with sex and other demographic variables. The study consisted of 2136 participants (930 male, 1206 female), which were provided to the researcher from GSS. The three demographic variables being studied in the research report are Age, Religious Preference and Marital Status. In order to test the level of significance for each variable the researcher conducted chi square analysis on each variable. The first hypothesis tested was that males with religious preference and females without religious preference will support cohabitation, while males without religious preference and females with religious reference will oppose cohabitation. The next hypothesis is that males and females who have been married, divorced or separate will be in against cohabitation and male sand females who have never been married will support it. The final hypothesis is that males older than thirty-five and females younger than thirty-five will support cohabitation, while males younger than thirty-five and females older than thirty-five will be opposed. Most of the data analyzed in this study is an agreement with previous research conducted. The next step in this research would be to include more demographic variables such as ethnicity and number of children.
