Realism has as its' focus the methodology of science through systematic study of recorded historical data as well as being influenced by a rationale dialogue on the philosophical level. William Harmon and Hugh Hohman state that:
             "Where romanticists transcend the immediate to find the ideal, and naturalists plumb the actual or superficial to find the scientific laws that control its actions, realists center their attention to a remarkable degree on the immediate, the here and now the specific action and the verifiable consequence. (A Handbook to Literature, 428; as cited by American Realism 1865-1890)
             Similarities exist in the writings of Mark Twain, Henry James and William Howells and those similarities are found in their artful creation of fictional characters that were created through "accurate representation and an exploration of the lives of Americans in various contexts." (American Realism 1865-1890; paraphrased) Realism had within its framework the inclusion of democracy set in a fictitious world at a time when the aristocracy was losing what had been an inherent and inherited honor and cultural icons began to set the wealthy apart as their own class.              Trachtenberg states in the work entitled: "The Incorporation of America" that realism: "...represented the antithesis of all things and posed a threat to all of the goals of literature that Mabie the critic expounded." (2006) Tracktenberg also holds that "realism could be identified with the rebelliousness of the age...[and]..."...whether the particular 'crime' was depicting commonplace people, showing the inner details of the human body, or portraying commoners in activities..."
