             The main text of Judaism is the Torah, which contains the first five books of the Bible – Genesis, Exodus, Levitcas, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. The Bible is divided into the three parts, the first being the Torah, followed by The Prophets, which contains both historical works and works of prophecy. The third section contains the eleven books known as the Writings or Ketuvim, which is a miscellany of poetry, wisdom, prophecy, and history (Coogan 1998).
             The central characteristic of Jewish worship is the recitation of prayers, which are found in the Jewish prayer book, called the siddur. Jews are expected to recite three prayers daily (more on the Sabbath and holidays), and although solitary prayer is valid, praying in a synagogue (house of worship) is ideal.
