Banning a classic

             There is still a big controversy over whether The Catcher in the Rye should be required reading at the high school level. Some people feel The Catcher in the Rye should be required reading because it helps people grow and learn more about life and living. Others feel that it isn't a good book because of the language and the topics that come up during the story that they feel is inappropriate for high school students to read. The Catcher in the Rye should be required reading at the high school level because: it is age appropriate; easy to relate to; easy to read and analyze for teens.
             The Catcher in the Rye should be required reading because it is easy to comprehend and to analyze. This is a great book for high school students because it isn't very difficult to read and, therefore, you have more time to get into a more thorough analysis. You can concentrate more on the symbolic means in the book instead of worrying about what a word means. Teens won't get frustrated because they can understand the language and that makes a book more fun to read.
             The Catcher in the Rye is age appropriate for high school students. Holden is the same age as a high school student and very possibly could be going through some of the same experiences. "A best seller for young people who theoretically could be the same age as the hypothetical progeny of Salinger's protagonist" (Ralston). This is better and more interesting for students to read than some book like Gilgamesh that is not relatable
