             A key argument against bilingual education is that test scores in bilingual schools are considerably lower than for schools where only English is used (Mahon, 2006). Schools in California that use bilingual education historically receives the lowest possible ratings on standardized test scores (Nichols, 2001). This has been a key issue in the arguments against the use of bilingual education in the school system. However, this is tempered by the argument that non-native English speakers do not have the basic skills necessary to excel in the basics. For those that do not have sufficient skills in English to pass the test, it can be argued that the test given in English is not an accurate assessment of their basic skills (Jia, Eslami, and Burlbaw, 2006). If the test were given in their native language these children may score higher on their basic skills.
