             He was considered to be a cultural Zionist and was very active in both the educational community and the Jewish community in Israel and in Germany. He also supported a binational solution for Palestine, instead of the two-state solution that others were so strongly in favor of, and the influence that he had was seen across many areas of the humanities, including religious existentialism, social philosophy, and social psychology (Biemann, 2002). The latter of those three was likely where his influence was the strongest.
             It is important to discuss that influence because much of what Buber dealt with relates to theories seen today, such as the self-presentation theory. This theory states that people want to appear consistent (Utah, 2002). Because of this, they sometimes behave in ways that they would not normally, so that they will fit in with others (Schreerg, 2003). In other words, they make up who they are and change their outward attitudes so that others will accept them. Many people do this, at least to some extent, when they find that they want to fit in with a group of people. Buber points out that the I-thou relationships that many people have are extremely important to those people, but they also revolve around the ideals and beliefs of both of those people, which are often not the same (Biemann, 2002).
             For example, people that read about tooth brushing and that it is dangerous are likely wanting to fit in with others that share that opinion and with other members of that group. This causes them to say that they believe tooth brushing to be dangerous, even if they believe, inside, that it is a good idea and not harmful.
