The parent, especially the mother, introduced the world to the child. Horney suggested that the child exhibits anxiety as a primary reaction to his very dependence on adults for his survival. His anxiety develops because he is uncertain of his parents' love, protection and nourishment. But when deprivation occurs, the child must develop defenses in order to compensate for the intolerable realization that his parents are only human. These defenses work to provide him the satisfaction and sense of security he needed in childhood and as he grew up.
