             Constitution played a very important part in the history of the Kingdom of Hawaii, as every new constitution promulgated was designed to give more power to the elected government and less to the monarch. The Kingdom of Hawaii was designed in a complex administrative manner, showing a great commitment for self-governance. Because Hawaii was already a viable modern state the American influence was even harder to implement, making Hawaii today a unique mix of native and American culture.
             The period when Hawaii was a kingdom was not at all peaceful and uneventful. The Kingdom of Hawaii was led by two dynasties and the change from one dynasty to another was the result of elections. As tensions grew following the election campaign, US troops were called to offer assistance to the new elected king.
             During the reign of King Kalakaua the influence and power of the American and European population increased after the King was forced to sign what was called the "Bayonet Constitution". The new constitution, adopted in 1887, was rightfully called this way because the King was forced give up his administrative authority. Other measures supported by the new constitution denied voting rights to Asians and created more rights for Europeans, Americans, and native Hawaiians, such as minimum income and property requirements for American, European and Hawaiian voters. The constitution can be seen as mirroring the realities of late 19th century Hawaii, clearly showing the differences that were made between different ethnic groups. Following King Kalakaua's death in 1891, his sister Liliuokalani was named Queen, but she only reigned until 1893, when she was overthrown.
