             The final theme that is quite prominent in the text is that of miscommunication. Once Lia is diagnosed by Western physicians with epilepsy, her parents are given substantial amounts of medication to stop Lia's seizures. Lia's parents, unsure of why the medication is needed, decide to cut back on the medications and seek more traditional methods of healing. When Lia's physician finds out about the situation, he obtains a court order and has Lia placed in foster care. Lia's parents are devastated as they believe that they have been good parents. Unfortunately, the miscommunication taking place prevented both Lia and her physician from understanding each other's viewpoint.
