e common space is where the family spends time together and each of the other spaces is defined by their function as either child or adult use. These are not simply definitions of space for the sake of decorating and sleeping arrangements. Spaces built around these designs will incorporate ideals that define the life of the space. While children may enter the adult space, they will be aware that this space is not their own through the design and arrangement. Similarly, a children's space may have small alcoves appealing to children but not as enjoyable for adults. Adults in such a space will, again, be out of their element here.
             According to Alexander, spaces affect our experiences. By creating spaces thoughtfully we can create the experiences we intend for a space. In other words, we create the space and the space creates the experience. Therefore, we create our experiences through creating our space. This is the basis of the theoretical framework that Alexander uses for design. He goes a few steps further by incorporating his collected ideas about beauty and function.
             Alexander's tools for establishing these design ideals are outlined in great detail in his books. Among the basic tenets of his theories, Alexander actually provides hundreds of "architectural recipes" for everything from homes to cities. This constitutes a large volume or information, far beyond the scope of this paper. However, a number of important concepts emerge from Alexander's designs and writing.
