This was quite a contrast from the early history of Nokia when engineer Fredrik Idestam opened up a wood-pulp mill in 1865. In 1898 the Finnish Rubber Works began using the Nokia brand for its galoshes, tires, and other rubber products. In 1912, the industrial conglomerate planted its seed in the telecom business by launching the Finnish Cable Networks. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, new technology breakthroughs in converting analog sound signals to digital form for transmission gave birth to wireless technology. Using this technology, the Nordic countries collaborated to create the world's first multinational cellular network, called the Nordic Mobile Telephone (NMT) system. The NMT system became a great success because it allowed easy international roaming in the Nordic countries which are sparsely populated in a cold climatic weather, which made traditional land-lines cost prohibitive.
