             draw upon this goodness to strive towards the three principles mentioned above. This is done through education, self-reflection and discipline (Zukeran, 1996-2008). It is therefore clear that the basis of Confucianism, as mentioned above, focuses on social roles and relationships. It is a fundamentally horizontal rather than vertical principle. As such, Confucius identifies five important relationships, where certain attitudes must be maintained for optimal social harmony and order. According to Zukeran, these are:
