Early implantation among children may prevent them from having global developmental delay. Cochlear implants have allowed deaf children to have better auditory performance, better expressive and receptive language level, better speech recognition, and higher reading levels (Scherf et al., 2007). In a study that compared non-verbal development among deaf children with and without cochlear implants, deaf children without implants were found to lag in cognitive and behavioral skills at a very early age; they also did poorly with visual tasks and their motor performance were delayed (Schlumberger, Narbona, and Manrique, 2004).
