Baptista views Bianca as the more valuable daughter and she resents Bianca because he does not feel this way towards her. Being discussed in the street as a kind of commodity to be sold to a group of men that have already professed their preference for Bianca shows that even though Kate acts like a tough shrew in the beginning, she may not actually be that way as a person and it explains her guard being up and her defensive attitude as a defense mechanism.
