ca. In 1859, Twain obtained his pilot's license and flew up and down the Mississippi, some of these accounts become the subjects of his most famous works. The Civil War hit Twain hard, it essentially cut down all business on the Mississippi and forced him to find new work. He had a stent in Confederate Army, but ended up rejoining Orion Nevada, where he spent the next year panning for silver and gold. This year was the inspiration for his work Roughing It. He got work for the Virginia City Territorial Enterprise, and it was here he started writing exclusively under the pseudonym Mark Twain, but it was short lived as a rival journalist caused him to flee to San Francisco. While he was in San Francisco he became know for his moralistic approach to writing. He continued to hop around the country writing stories for the remained of his life, staying in the same place no more than a couple years. Some of his most famous works include " The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" ," The Adventures of Tom Sawyer", "Roughing it", " The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County", and " The Prince and the Pauper".
