Posting Advertisements in Public Schools

             When a student walks through the halls of a high school, they see light filled walls lined with lockers. Recently, these blank walls have given way to for-profit advertisements in cash-starved schools. Driven by the need to pay outside pensions, Americans are now debating whether ads should be placed. Both sides of this issue possess great evidence to prove their points. Ads should be put into schools because it would generate money to support the school supporters argue this and teach students about advertising.
             In a speech to the people of New Jersey, Governor Chris Christie states, "Ads would tear schools apart. There would be arguments for which ads are appropriate. Also, you don't want our American schools to turn in Advertising Agencies." (Hughes). If ads were to be put into schools, many parents feel that it would distract from the curriculum that is supposed to be taught to their children. For instance, a school could use a student work book that illustrates cartoons of a popular character that is provided by the network that uses that character. This then shows that a student's education shouldn't be distracted by a corporate message and it could affect their learning process (Hughes). Not only have schools been advertising, buses have as well. In Document A, the visual shows a school bus with a Little Caesar's ad on it (Merrifield). One may think that only public transportation for adults should have advertising plastered on their buses. The vehicles that transport children shouldn't because a school bus isn't a place for advertisement. Also, the Little Caesar's ad is showing children to eat a very unhealthy type of food: pizza. (Merrifield) Schools are supposed to help drop the obesity rate of young Americans, not increase it.
