s back he asked if he could borrow my car to make a run to the store and I let him. After he came back and we visited for a while I decided to go home. I usually keep some spare cash in the ashtray of my car just in case. On my way home I decided to stop off at the store and get myself something to drink, as I opened the ashtray to grab a few dollars I noticed it was empty. I called my brother in law to ask him what had happened to my money and he said he did not know what I was talking about. Things became very tense between us because I did not believe he was telling me the truth. After two weeks of keeping the secret he finally told me he took my money. While I was glad he finally admitted to it, I was upset he took it without asking me or mentioning when I noticed it was gone. He and I have made a mends, but it is sad to say that I can never trust him alone around anything I feel is worth value.
             Another side effect to keeping secrets within a relationship is the growing distance that will occur between the person that is keeping the secret and the person that is being left in the dark. The secret holder becomes distant because they are "temporarily making something a higher priority than the relationship" (Lancer). In this case they are making the secret their top priority because it is so important to them that their partner doesn't find out. It begins to consume their relationship. They fear that if they let their guard down they will reveal the secret by mistake. Over time the emotional distance will grow between the couple and weaken the strength of the relationship possibly causing it to fall apart. Instead of talking about the secret they were keeping they feel they need to lie to keep it. Once it comes out it becomes worse than what it would have been because it is now lies on top of secrets instead of just the main problem.
