over a period of time. They are:
             • Two persons in psychological contact (the therapeutic relationship);
             • The client is in a state of incongruence, being vulnerable and anxious;
             • The therapist is congruent or integrated in the relationship;
             • The therapist demonstrates unconditional positive regard (UPR) for the client;
             • The therapist demonstrates empathetic understanding to the client;
             • The communication to the client of the therapist's empathetic understanding and unconditional positive regard is achieved.
             "No other conditions are necessary. If these six conditions exist, and continue over a period of time, this is sufficient. The process of constructive personality change will follow" (Rogers, p.221)
             However, I do not agree with the above paragraph. There will be times when a therapist may have to go into therapy and unless shown unconsciously, they will not be incongruent because they are aware of the process. They may in fact be attending therapy because of some personal trauma or tragedy they are experiencing in their life, for example, bereavement or depression. They are already aware of self-actualization and congruence.
             Carl Rogers's person-centered approach focuses on the "here and now" and according to Pete Saunders, Rogers..."believed that "all human beings have an inbuilt capacity to grow and achieve their full potential" (Saunders, p.31).
             Unconditional Positive Regard means that the therapist accepts the client unconditionally and non-judgmentally. The client is free to explore all thoughts and feelings, positive or negative, without danger of rejection or condemnation. Crucially, the client is free to explore and express without having to do anything in particular or meet any particular standards of behaviour to 'earn' positive regard from the therapist.
