For an individual to have to deal with the voluminous social pressures placed upon them is strenuous on the individual's state of mind, health, and way of life. It has practically become a social norm to be so self-conscious about such diminutive characteristics like appearance, social status, intelligence, and athletic ability in the recent years. Where does the wide range of self-consciousness derive from? It is plausible to say that the pressures are placed upon individuals by others in their societies who sometimes unknowingly force them to change their behavioral patterns or interests to fit the mold of the so-called "everyday American", but is that truly the main reason? To think that not only do these social pressures affect adults or elders, but adolescents and young children makes it mind-boggling to find one main source from which these pressures come from. Whether the forces are light or harsh, any kind of sociological pressure is not always positive, so are forces only made for bad reasons? In many cases, pressures to be the thinnest, the fittest, the fastest, the coolest, the most rebellious, the most perfect, or to be truthful, the best, cause competition amongst individuals of a society, and may lead to mental and, or, physical destruction. Teenagers face many pressures dealing with competing to be the top student, needing to have perfect papers, to be smarter than the girl or boy who knows the answer to every question, to have the perfect body, to be the best athlete, to be liked by the quarterback, to fit in with the "in" crowd, and in the end they may even be subjected to bringing everyone else down on their way to the top.
