Poseidon, god of the sea among other elements, was one of the many deities in Greek mythology. People often paid tribute to him for the stories that go along with his power. As the creator of storms, earthquakes and sea monsters, he controlled much of the unexplainable phenomena people could not control or configure ("Poseidon", 2006). From this belief, one can see the personification of the sea as a people prayed for mercy and for their journey to go well. What brought about the continuation of this belief was the communication and interaction of people. (Birch-Dave 2006) The same basic principle is applied to animism and the belief of an object possessing a soul and yet, animism dates back even further than Greek Mythology.
