"The person who risks nothing, does nothing, has nothing, is nothing, and

becomes nothing. He may avoid suffering and sorrow, but he simply cannot

learn and feel and change and grow and love and live." said Leo F.

Buscaglia. On the contrary to the realists, some people love the escapism

of living as a recluse, slipping into another character for a little while.

Both "The O.C." and " Gossip Girl" give an account of the tale that happens

among a group of high school students with various personalities, including

Seth Cohen and Dan Humphrey. If Seth Cohen and Dan Humphrey were to attend

the same high school, they would not be friends.

Seth Cohen and Dan Humphrey have different personalities and different ways

of act. Despite living under an affluent family, Seth acts as an escapist

who always resists, or escapes from the reality subconsciously, hoping

thereby to come to some form of freedom. When he goes out sailing with

Ryan, he tells Ryan that he is planning on a trip to Tahiti, a scenic

island which is far from where he lives. He plans to live along the sea by

himself, catching fish and roast them to eat. He emphasizes that he hopes

to be in a place that is "totally quiet". The paradox is that there is a

polarity between the lifestyle that Seth is looking forward to and his

present situation. Living in a big roaring society, Seth never shows his

dissatisfaction directly, however, his inmost wish is to find a "totally

quiet" place to live in as a means of evading. Also, Tahiti is described as

"the closest place to heaven". Heaven is considered the most holy and quiet

place in the world, the search for heaven also hints about Seth's

willingness of getting rid of his current situation.

In contrast, Dan takes the role of protector of his younger sister, Jenny.
