             As with all technological breakthroughs, downsides seem to occur. As over the years ultrasounds have been chastised with causing damage to unborn babies. During the 1990's, studies were showing that ultrasound scanning can affected unborn babies. Research has advised that slight brain damage can cause people who might be genetically right-handed to become left-handed. Also, these people face greater risks of unforeseen circumstance that range from learning difficulties to epilepsy. (Robert Mathews 2001) To rebuttal to this claim, WebMD explains that studies have shown ultrasound is not hazardous. There are no harmful side effects to you or your baby. In addition, ultrasound does not use radiation, as X-ray test do. (WebMD 2012) An article from the Mayo Clinic also states that routine fetal ultrasounds are considered safe for both mother and baby. Researchers haven't noted any adverse effects of fetal ultrasounds in children followed for several years after birth. (Mayo Clinic Staff 2012) While each technology has its doubters, science has determined that ultrasounds are safe and do not cause any harm to the mother and/or the unborn child.
