during the multipolar system, it was now clear where the military power resided (and still does today). This configuration is important in describing the post-war peace era because it was the ultimate foundation for stability.
             The main stabilizing affect of a bipolar international system that weren't present in the multipolar system is its simplicity. When the intricacies of a multipolar system are removed, the stakes involved for the two major actors increase. This induces a greater sense of caution and responsibility for the leaders involved, independent of the skill level of these leaders. This simple structure also allows for more stable alliance networks. Based on balance of power logic, a system with more sources of polarity translates to more opportunities for insecurity. Less insecurity means simpler alliances. In a bipolar system, defections are also more tolerable due to the greater durability of the alliances (Gaddis 47).
             A more obvious reason for peace is the buffer of geography. The vast geographic separation between United States and the Soviet Union has influenced the lack of economic dependence present in their relationship. Historically, their relationship has always been characterized by mutual independence.
