Over the last decade many countries have experienced a surge in demand for
            
 English as a foreign language. As developing countries have begun to open to
            
 the world, the demand for English has soared. Foreign language teaching in
            
 many developing countries has played an important role in education, as well
            
 as in the development of the country. In particular, English has been in the
            
 leading position with the highest number of students in Vietnam. Together
            
 with the development of language, language teaching methodology has also
            
 developed a lot to ensure the effectiveness of teaching and learning. This
            
 development is in fact the import of modern foreign language teaching
            
 approach used in developed contexts, usually called communicative language
            
 teaching (CLT). Using the implementation of CLT in the Vietnamese context is
            
 really necessary but the effectiveness also must be taken into account. The
            
 essay argues that the implementation of CLT in the Vietnamese context faces
            
 challenges and constraints. The reasons for consideration lie not only in the
            
 approach but also in teaching context, learning and teaching style, teacherstudent
            
 relationship, technology and facilities, examinations and curriculum,
            
  Firstly, it is difficult to admit that communicative language teaching (CLT) is a
            
 universal approach. According to Holliday (1994), the communicative
            
 approach is culture-sensitive in itself and it can be modified to suit any
            
 classroom cultural context. To obtain an appropriate methodology, one needs
            
 to know about the culture of the classroom which is affected by the culture

 outside in society. As Holliday points out, learning in the classroom needs to
            
 be worked out from the real context of teaching and learning. He argues that
