pare with a non-culturally specific diabetic prevention program affect the child's adherence to diet and exercise one year post-program?
1. To examine evidence-based practice/research-based literature on the rates of diabetes among youth in northern Aboriginal reserves.
2. To assess literature related to Aboriginal culturally focused prevention programs and treatment compared to non-culturally focused preventative measures and treatment.
It is hypothesized that a culturally appropriate diabetic prevention program including diet and exercise, will be more beneficial than a non-culturally appropriate diabetic prevention program in decreasing the diabetic rates among Aboriginal youth living in northern reserves. The independent variable is Aboriginal youth ages 12-19 years and the dependent variable is the prevention programs.
Madeline Leininger's theory of culture care diversity states that caring is a universal phenomenon but varies trans-culturally (Loiselle et al, 2011). Transcultural nursing is defined as an area of study and practice focused on comparative cultural care values, beliefs, and practices of individuals or groups similar or different cultures with the goal of providing culture-specific nursing care practices in promoting health or well-being in culturally meaningful ways.
These key concepts can stimulate nurses to design nursing actions and decisions using new knowledge and culturally based ways to provide meaningful and satisfying holistic care to individuals, groups or institutions. Furthermore, nurses can follow this theory to design nursing care using Aboriginal cultures to be tailored for their specific needs in the northern reserves. Incorporation of this theoretical model for this study may show that in order to create preventative programs for these communities, they may need to be different preventative programs that are used in more urban communities. The prevention programs may need to be more focu...
