iod of time. The attachment theory is one that enables us to be able to better understand the relationship between two people both from an early age to adulthood. John Bowlby has a theory that can be directly related to the attachment development between a mother and her child. The majority of Bowlby's attachment theory stems from the bond and attachment that infants develop with regards to their primary caregivers. Bowlby's theory suggests that people are automatically born with a certain set of attachment characteristics such as with animals that are also born with the desire and need to depend on their primary caregiver to teach them and help them develop (Kerig & Wenar, 2006). Bowlby's theory also allows us to see how and why the attachment theory starts between infants and their mothers. Attachment at this stage of development is most important because an infant cannot survive on its own and needs the support and care of an adult (Kerig & Wenar, 2006). Children who do not receive this type of support often times grow up and incorporate those negative tendencies towards their own children even if they don't mean to. Bowlby also suggested that infants and young children between the ages of 6 months to 4 years old, if deprived of a mother, would have difficulties later on in their lives because they would lack the ability to form any kind of attachment with another person. Those early experiences of being comforted and given relief of negative feelings is what leads to being able to develop a secure attachment and would help these children, as adults, later in life by limiting the number of negative expressions of anger with regards to their relationships whether they be parental, professional or social (Behringer, Reiner, Gottfried 2011). By not learning the characteristics which are necessary to form a secure relationship with someone, these children will grow up and most likely lack the skills necessary to be able to establish that...
