             Andrew Curtin's promptness to support the union cause exemplified his patriotism far more than his motivational verses. Curtin wasted little time after his first term as Governor began in January of 1861. Furthermore, the State Legislature was at harmony with Curtin's suggestions. In April 1861, early in the session of the Pennsylvania state legislature, before the commencement of Civil War, a project was started appropriating a large sum of money for the purpose of arming the militia of the state. On April 9th 1861 Curtin made important provisions to new war measure for arming and equipping the militia. After three days this crucial war measure became law. In his message to the legislature Curtin stated "Pennsylvania yields to no state in her respect for and willingness to protect her constitutional rights and the Union."
