Many of the citizens in Dominica earn a living by subsistence gardening, selling bay oil, fishing, their banana production, and a small group helps with wage labor (Quinlan, 29). Due to the area they live in, the people of Dominica face problems when it comes to leaving their area, getting to a doctor office or getting a prescription from those doctor's offices. Western medicine practices are used in Dominica, though because of their limited resources and inability to travel long distances, they do not depend on the ways of western society as often as they depend on their bush medicines (Quinlan, 64). Alternatively, Dominicans rely on their humoral system, dirty blood, and their bush medicines. The humoral system is relative to hot and cold and the imbalance between the two within a person's body and the foods or drinks they ingest (Quinlan, 61). An illness that could be humoral can be caused from eating certain foods or from something as simple as working for long periods in the heat. These can be cured from specific foods or drinks that are considered hot or cold foods, for example because a tomato is red it would be called a hot food, even if the temperature of that food is not warm. The way in which they treat hot and cold illnesses are with the opposite heat related treatment, for instance, a hot illness would be cured with a cold food and a cold illness would be cured with a hot food. This is done to level out the body to reach the ideal state of balance in order to reach the ideal level of health (Quinlan, 61).
