This belief helped learn everything is a break off of the spirit world. Ultimately it is the sign of the creator. Along with building a strong connection to mother earth and the Creator, resulting in great respect for the land they resided. Within the community, everyone had their specific roles, Hunting, raiding, and making tools and weapons were the responsibilities of men. Woman's responsibilities included gathering wild resources, such as prairie turnips, processing and tanning hides, cooking, sewing, quill work, and managing the daily needs of the household. Grandparents and elders were often entrusted with the primary responsibility for caring for small children and infants and assisting with household tasks.
             Even children had a role in the camp, placed with the responsibility of watching the younger children and helping with gathering firewood along with other daily chores. Belief systems and rituals of the Lakotas and reflect many of their values. Being the magnificent plains people they are known to be, the Lakota had to build their strength and leadership among the Great Sioux Nation. The introduction of horses to the plains people was key to growth and dominance of their community. The Lakota did not fundamentally become Plains horsemen until 1750-1775, the Sioux began moving westward and southward, pulled by the abundant Plains buffalo and the diffusion of horses from the Southern Plains.
