Most of them are now privately owned. The complex contains on its surface three towers called Lauderline, Shakespeare and Cromwell, which were the highest residential blocks in Europe at that time. The Estate is so vast that is called a 'megastructure', as well. It offers fascinating views. The City of London School for Girls, the Guildhall school of Music and the church of St Giles Cripplegate are placed within it. Barbican can be very inspiring with the series of viewpoints it can offer. The main building is the Barbican Center which was built between 1968 and 1982. It has good internal spaces but is quite hard to access because ''functional requirements grew during the planning process and consequently had to be passed into a smaller space than would have been ideal, but this does not result in an interesting play with the interior level.'' quoted from Discovering London's buildings with twelve walks by John Bold."
