Jane Eyre

             Bronte's talent lies in her ability to place two contrasting characters in the novel and making them fall for each other. Jane Eyre and Mr. Rochester were to be Bronte's vessels of such confusion. As the novel developed, it led readers to assume that any union between these two is impossible. But Bronte's writing was able to make these two fighting foes combine into the single personalities of Jane and Mr. Rochester. Bronte's talents lie in her ability to present two greatly contrasting characters through her narrations and then successfully manipulate her fictional creations to compliment each other despite their differences. In the particular scene given for analysis Jane meets Rochester for the first time. I my following essay I plan to discuss the use of language by Bronte to express Jane's feelings. Bronte uses description of nature, imagery to depict the mood, characteristics or forth coming events. I would also be discussing on how the use first person narrative helps us to gain insight into Jane's feelings at this point.
             Jane's walk to the post office is an attempt to distance herself, at least for the time being, from her passive life at Thornfield. The lane she passes is noted for roses, nuts and berries in autumn, but is now in a state of "utter solitude and leafless repose." It reflects the state of Jane's mind at that time. The passage begins with an uphill journey to Hay. This could be comparable to Jane's improvements in life from orphan student to school teacher to governess. She decides to sit 'on a stile' in the middle of her journey. This could also signify her life turning events at Thornfield. The whether was cold but she 'did not feel the cold'. Bronte wants us to realize that she is warm and happy with her present status through the first person narrative.
