             The movie 'Looking for Alibrandi' exhibits issues that relate directly to teenage life for many Australians today. Topics such as race, status and sex have a large impact on the main character Josephine Alibrandi's life.
             Race is the main conflict in the story of looking for alibrandi and helps to raise many issues. Josie is of italian descent and considered by some a 'wog', facts such as this lead her to be segregated with 'her own kind'. This is shown when josie's friend tries to convince her that "the wogs marry the wogs, the westies marry the westies and the north shore marry the north shore!" in an effort to tell her that Jacob Coote is not for her, nor is John Barton. Josephine Alibrandi's grandmother or nonna is constantly drumming the italian culture into her head, but she refuses to accept the rather ancient traditions, such as tomato day- or in josie's mind national wog day. In the movie, nonna is seen to say the rosary 10 times before sleeping and the reaction of josie shows her acceptance of her racial heritage. Josie does not believe in the lines of seperation between races, she sees Australia as multi-cultural society that includes everyone. The words inbetween cultures sums up how the audience is to perceive josie, but this of course is not the case with those stuck-up racist girls at St. Marthas, in particular poison ivy. A scene which depicts such attitudes is the one in which Carly refers to Josie as a 'wog' and she reacts the only way it seems she knows how, by slamming her science text book in carly's face.
             Carly is of higher status than Josephine, due to factors such as her father's occupation, wealth and poularity at school and in the media. Josie Alibrandi struggles to overcome her status disadvantage. Josie was the result of an unwanted teenage pregnancy, which forced her mother out of home and drove her to undesired autonomy.
