             1. I choose the importance of planting seeds and having something "in the ground" because it is a representation of someone who wants to be remembered as a great person. The garden/seed is a symbolic of Willy's desire for success in life and needing to leave something behind for people to remember him by. Something that people will think about and remember him as a great man. In act one Willy mentions "The grass don't grow anymore, you can't raise a carrot in the back yard", but at the end of the play his final act in life is planting a garden in the middle of the night in the backyard of his house. He planted the seed as an attempt to leave a legacy as a great man after he realizes that he actually wasn't "well liked" and a successful salesman.
             The seeds are actually known to not grow because planting a garden is a little too late to be successful in life. Willy's life has already been a failure and he has left nothing remarkable by which to be remembered. The planting of the seed also leads to Willy's sacrifice because he has given up since he realizes his goals are unrealistic and attempts are a failure. He does not want to die as a man but as a great man.
             2. The first foil is the contrasts is Ben to Willy. Willy represents the common man. He feels that he must be a good provider for his family. Willy also fights for his son's approval. He wants to see himself as a great salesman and a great provider. The problem he faces is that he doesn't have faith in himself. Weakness and self-doubt surround his life. Ben is wealthy, bold and ruthless business man. He is the essence of a successful American. Ben is the personification of the American Dream.
