             As previously mentioned, schizophrenia is not a disorder that exists in a large percentage of the population.              During my special education advocacy work, I provided services for a young boy, age nine when I began working with him, who had a father who was institutionalized from his early adulthood because of the severity of his schizophrenia. He resided with his Mother, who had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Throughout my time working with the mother and son, I came to notice that the mother presented with many of the symptoms of schizophrenia as did the son. At age 9, he had spent approximately a month at an adult psychiatric facility because of his delusions and psychotic episodes. It was clear that the behaviors were in part because of his family history with mental illness.
